Dr. Lawrence Mendelsohn, Oncologist – A Legacy of Service

When you ask patients about their experience with Dr. Lawrence Mendelsohn, they’ll often tell you about how kind and caring he is. They’ll tell you how he explained their diagnosis in a way that they could understand, but weren’t overwhelmed by. They’ll tell you he’s a man of faith, and that it shines through in the way he treats others. He would tell you it’s all just a part of his calling – and that’s why he was chosen as the 2023 recipient of the Pulaski County Medical Society’s President’s Award for a Lifetime of Outstanding Contributions to Medicine.

Together with Dr. Tony Flippin, Dr. Mendelsohn formed Little Rock Hematology/Oncology in 1985 with a mission to provide expert specialized care for patients with hematology and oncology diagnoses. Over the years, Dr. Mendelsohn developed a reputation for truly caring about his patients and practicing excellent care. By 2013, Little Rock Hematology and Oncology was the largest cancer clinic in Central Arkansas – and when it joined CARTI that year, it broadened its provision of services and created a comprehensive cancer care experience for its patients.

Over his tenure at CARTI, Dr. Mendelsohn has cemented his legacy as not only a compassionate physician, but a dedicated cancer expert who is constantly seeking the best for his patients. His work hearkens to that of Dr. William Osler, a physician who didn’t just see his calling as a scientific one, but also one that prioritized the lives and hearts of his patients. Dr. Mendelsohn does not take lightly the opportunity to treat a patient and is a welcome recipient of the lessons each patient has to give.

Beyond his outstanding work as a physician, Dr. Mendelsohn’s legacy of service extends to his community, too. Dr. Mendelsohn and his wife, Sonya, developed and participated in a ministry to the Inner City, raising money to send countless young people to summer camp. They developed a 5K race to benefit several nonprofits, hold a Messianic Passover to share the traditions of the Jewish faith, and have done countless other acts of service behind the scenes.

CARTI is incredibly proud to see Dr. Mendelsohn’s life’s work honored with this award, as we get to witness his continued compassionate care every day.
