CARTI Board Member Honors Husband
A generous gift made by Lorene Jones will establish the Danny M. Jones Memorial Fund, in support of the CARTI Endowment. Jones has served on the CARTI Foundation Board of Directors since 2008 and is currently serving as committee chair for the 2010 Ragin Cajun event, with her daughter, Rachelle Doucet. Lorenes late husband, Danny, was treated at CARTI and both have been supporters of CARTIs mission for many years.
Income generated from the Danny M. Jones Memorial Fund will support the needs of cancer patients receiving treatment at CARTI. Lorene has truly gone above and beyond, supporting the mission, financially, as well as giving her time to help organize the Festival of Trees and Ragin Cajun events. Now she is helping CARTI continue serving cancer patients for years to come through this endowed fund, noted Mike Wilkinson, CARTI Foundation Board Chairman
Lorene and Danny Jones moved to Little Rock from Michigan in 1984 and founded Airfirst, an aviation consulting firm. Mr. Jones design of planes suitable for transporting horses led to a love of racehorses and then to a business in raising racehorses. Ms. Jones continues work in both arenas and enjoys spending time with their two children and seven grandchildren. We want to thank Lorene Jones again for her commitment to the mission of CARTI.
Scholarship Awards Ceremony
On Tuesday, June 2nd twenty-one CARTI Kids and their families attended the 12th Annual CARTI Kids Dennis Jungmeyer Scholarship Awards Ceremony, presented by the Tenenbaum Foundation, at the Arkansas Governor's Mansion. CARTI Kids are the pediatric cancer patients treated at CARTI between infancy and 18 years of age.
Dennis Jungmeyer and First Lady Ginger Beebe awarded these twenty-one scholars with undergraduate and graduate school scholarships valued at $2,500 each - totaling over $52,000 in scholarships. Of the twenty-one scholars, thirteen were recipients of named fellowship awards, which are made possible through private donations.
According to CARTI Kid, Patrick Wyerick, who was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in the summer of 1999 After I finished my treatment I tried to forget about cancer and all the memories that went along with it. It was not until recently that I realized that I shouldnt try to forget. Instead, I became active with the CARTI Kids and met a lot of great people through the program. The people that I have met through the trips and retreats will always be on my mind. I have been in remission now for almost ten years, and it has taken me about that long to realize what I should strive for. My goal should not have been to get my life back the way it was before, but instead use those lessons and experiences to better myself along the way. Some of my favorite people work at CARTI; they save my life and the life of my mother. Things like that should not be forgotten. They should be cherished. Patrick was awarded the Tenenbaum Foundation Fellowship Award because of his humanitarian service to CARTI.
Congratulations to the recipients of the 2009 CARTI Kids Dennis Jungmeyer Scholarship Awards: Meagan Aitchison, Miranda Baird, Morgan Butler, Stephen Clem, Ben Dalton, Marcos Davy, Ryan Dickerson, Shelley Dockery, Amelia Floriani, Alex Giannavola, Colleen Hathaway, Ethan Helm, Ryne Johnson, Kevin Leon, Eli Lindsey, Celso Medina, Kendall Meins, Clayton Mitchell, Jessica Mullen, Mary Elise Porter, and Patrick Wyerick.
The CARTI Kid Program is designed to continue CARTIs mission of treating the whole patient and not just the cancer.
